As we roll into 2017, this is the perfect time to take a moment to reflect on this past year. If there are things that happened that are wonderful then cherish them. If there are things that you’d like to forget about then forget about them. Or if negative things happened that you could never forget about, then just push forward and leave them in the past, as the past. We learn and grow from every aspect of life. Being in the salon as many years as I have I have heard some of the most beautiful life events and some of the most heartbreaking and tragic stories. I will always keep all of them with me, so many people have touched my life and this helps me keep things in perspective. We are able evolve with knowledge, experience and a balanced perspective. So it’s time to ask yourself how you are going to be better this year.
Be Kind. It’s really easy to be kind to our friends and family. Actually it’s kind of expected and sometimes can be a bit unappreciated. None the less, kindness makes relationships stronger. But then we have random acts of kindness. Doing something kind for someone that doesn’t expect it goes very far. Not only does it effect the recipient, but it makes you feel so good. Think about the last time you did something extremely nice for someone out of the ordinary. And I mean from holding the door for the people behind you to anonymously picking up someones tab at the diner. Give someone standing in the rain an umbrella, send a care package to someone that could use a pick-me-up, or hand out blankets and coats to the homeless. The possibilities are endless. Any small gesture could be grand to someone that doesn’t expect it. And it truly is so self rewarding knowing that your helping someone out. This in turn could lead to to them paying it forward. People helping people is a pretty great concept.
Be Open Minded. It is very easy to look in from the outside and decide what you think is going on. As the saying goes, “You never know what is going on behind closed doors”. If someone looks or acts a certain way, maybe a way that you don’t approve of, don’t be so quick to judge. You never know what that person may going through. So simply be nice to people. If you hear someone passing negative judgment on someone else try to distract them with a positive thought. They may have their reasons, but you don’t have to take part in it.
Make Time For You. So all of these things above are wonderful ways of living. But you can’t do for others if you are not in a healthy and positive state. Exercising is a great way to keep your body and your mind strong. Meditation and Reflection allows you to make space within yourself. If you don’t have space for your own stuff, then it’s impossible to make space for others. Do what makes you happy. Weather it’s getting your hair done, reading a book or taking a piano lesson, put aside the time for you. That is truly the one one thing that only you can do for you, so do what makes you happy.
Be Grateful. Every morning when you wake up and take that first deep breath, hold a positive thought close to your heart. During the day, be in tune with the world around you. Be sure to take notice to the negative things because they are an important influence to your mindset but absolutely absorb the beautiful things around you. Personally speaking, I have heard so many situations of illness, tragedy, and life changing events that I try to make a conscience effort to appreciate the daily grind of life. At night when you lay your head on your pillow, take a moment to reflect on your day. If you had a fun day then it’s easy to to think about the excitement that you had. If you had a plain old ordinary day, then just be grateful for it. Some people would do anything to have a boring day. If you are someone that prays, then this is a great time to do such. If not then this is time to have a moment of gratitude for even the simplest things in life.
Let’s all get in the mindset to move into 2017 with a positive attitude, an open mind and a kind and grateful heart. Cherish what makes you happy. It’s 2017 so make things happen.
